Bonds去年12月接任馬林魚隊打擊教練，平心而論，今年這個球季馬林魚隊幾名年輕有不錯的表現，例如外野手Christian Yelich、Marcell Ozuna，還有捕手J.T. Realmuto，另外Martin Prado也打出個人生涯近幾年來最好的一個球季，Justin Bour在身體健康的狀況時，也有不錯的表現。
而且馬林魚隊全隊打擊率2成63，在國聯僅次於小熊隊，排名第二。但是馬林魚隊打擊雖表現不錯，但得分能力卻不如預期，本季得655分，排名第13，全壘打128支，只比勇士隊好，排名倒數第二，上壘率也排名第12，被保送的次數排名第14，從這些數據都可看出，馬林魚隊這些年輕球員雖然能打，但似乎選球能力差了點，適時一擊的功力也不夠，這些應該都是戰績不理想的原因。
然而這一切不完全都是Bonds的責任，畢竟他才第一年擔任馬林魚隊的打擊教練，或許對球員特性的掌握還沒完全到位，另外他跟總教練Mattingly也不是那麼好，因此馬林魚隊決定換掉Bonds。
